EDITORIAL: More should sign up for CodeRed here

May 01, 2013 (The Jamestown Sun - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- Every summer, North Dakotans can be certain they'll have to put up with road construction and severe weather.

The road construction is predictable and steady, but the weather is anything but. These storms are simply a fact of living in the Northern Plains.

The storms can vary from thunderstorms with threats of lightning strikes, hail and strong winds to tornadoes, which can destroy buildings and uproot trees.

All summer storms can be deadly. The only precautions people can take are to make sure they are safe from a storm. The first step is to make sure they are informed when severe weather is possible.

Sirens are commonly used in Jamestown and several of the small cities of Stutsman County. These are effective in calling attention to the weather situation. Commercial media, radio, television and the Internet are also useful in receiving information.

Technology has given the public a new tool to keep themselves informed about potential weather issues. The CodeRed Weather Warning System is available through Stutsman County. Members of the public who sign up for the program receive severe weather alerts on their home phone or cellphone. The messages can be in the form of a computerized voice or a text message.

While the system is simple to use and free of charge, less than 900 people have taken advantage of the system. Alerts are issued based on the address the user enters into the system and cover tornado, thunderstorms and flash floods. Sign up at the website www.co.stutsman.nd.us. Members of the public without access to the Internet can call the Emergency Management Office at 252-9093.

Keeping safe during severe summer weather is an individual responsibility. The CodeRed Weather Warning System is one of the best ways to meet that responsibility.
