Attacks 'highlight need for data breach notification law'

Mar 18, 2013 (The Australian Financial Review - ABIX via COMTEX) -- Computer security experts argue that recent disclosure by the Reserve Bank of Australia of cyber attacks on its systems shows the commercial banking sector is also vulnerable. While the Australian Bankers Association is adamant that its members have adequate anti-hacking measures in place, consumer advocates believe the trend to increased cyber threats means that law reform is needed. Under the changes, customers would need to be automatically informed by companies when hacking of data is detected. Federal Attorney-General Mark Dreyfus has signalled stricter data breach notification laws may be rolled out in future.
