ROCKEFELLER APPLAUDS NEW ELECTRONIC HEALTH RECORD FOR CHILDREN
WASHINGTON, D.C. - On the heels of the anniversary of the reauthorization of the Children's Health Insurance Program (CHIP), Senator Jay Rockefeller today lauded progress made on one of the key provisions of the 2009 reauthorization law: a new electronic health record (EHR) specifically designed to address the unique health care needs of children.
"A unique electronic health care record for children is a game changer," Rockefeller said. "Instead of using a health record format largely intended for adults, this new pediatric format will allow health care providers to significantly improve the quality of care provided to children."
Originally a provision of the Rockefeller-Snowe CHIP Reauthorization Act of 2007, the pediatric EHR was ultimately signed into law as part of the final CHIP reauthorization bill enacted in 2009.

The new pediatric format was created by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) and will help streamline the functionality, data standards, usability and interoperability of children's EHR systems, especially for children enrolled in Medicaid and CHIP.
