Hargray to purchase Savannah IT firm

Jan 23, 2013 (The Island Packet (Hilton Head Island - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- Hargray Communications of Hilton Head Island has agreed to buy Savannah-based internet technology firm iTech for an undisclosed amount, according to a news release. The deal is scheduled to close Jan. 31.

iTech provides technology assistance -- such as server management and back up, threat detaction and removal, and telephone systems -- to small- and medium-sized businesses, according to its website.

"We have been interested for some time in acquiring a managed-services company," said Michael Gottdenker, Chairman & CEO of Hargray.

"iTech is a terrific company with a dedicated workforce led by Alastair Fisher which we are excited to welcome to Hargray," he continued. "We believe that our larger scale and extensive fiber network combined with iTech's product set and our overlapping geography makes for a winning combination for both companies' customers." iTech's owner, George Powers, said now is the time to "join a larger organization" that will speed up the company's growth.

"I am grateful to our customers for entrusting to us their IT needs and I am certain our level of service will only get better through affiliation with Hargray," Powers said.

iTech was founded in Savannah in 2001, and has locations in Atlanta, Jacksonville, Fla., and Columbia.
