Google commercial features Eastwood High School graduation flash mob
Jan 08, 2013 (El Paso Times - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) --
Eastwood High School's Class of 2012 was one of the stars in a Google national commercial.
A blink-of-the-eye snippet of the mostly blue-robed graduates' flash mob dance during their June graduation ceremony appeared in Google's 2012 year-in-review TV commercial. The ad features scenes from popular searches on Google during the year.
While the one minute, 30-second TV commercial featured the Eastwood students' graduation dance, it's not on the 2 minute, 46-second online version.
It's the third year Google's created a year-in-review video. It's officially known as "Zeitgeist 2012: Year in Review."
Items were chosen for the videos "through a combination of the most searched (on Google), most popular and most
powerful human moments that helped us to capture and convey the spirit of 2012," reported Scott Chan in an email. He's director of the Google Zeitgeist videos, and founder of Whirled, a Los Angeles creative agency which has made the year-in-review videos the last three years.
The TV version is slightly different because it's a trimmed down version of the long-form web version, Chan said.
"In addition, the TV version only ran in the U.S., so we felt it was important to include more domestic moments that U.S. residents could relate to such as the Eastwood High School graduation flash mob dance and the LA Galaxy MLS cup victory," Chan said.
The TV commercial ran at the end of last year and start of this year, but is no longer airing.
Even though the annual video is relatively new, Google has been compiling its annual Zeitgeist report since 2001.
Zeitgeist is a German word meaning the intellectual, moral, and cultural climate of an era.
"'Zeitgeist'" means 'the spirit of the times,' and this spirit can be seen through the aggregation of billions of search queries Google receives every day," Google reported.
The latest Zeitgeist report, and its lists of top Google searches, and the online year-in-review video can be found at Google's Zeitgeist page.
The TV commercial version with the Eastwood High graduation segment can still be found online.
The YouTube video from which the commercial snippet was taken has more than 57,000 views. Another YouTube video with the graduates' dance has more than 162,000 views.
The Huffington Post also wrote about the flash mob dance in June.
