South Korea's Largest Mobile Operator, SK Telecom, Selects Arbor Networks' Peakflow(R) SP Platform for Mobile Infrastructure & Service Protection

CHELMSFORD, MA, Sep 19, 2012 (MARKETWIRE via COMTEX) -- Arbor Networks, Inc., a leading provider of network security and management solutions for enterprise and service provider networks, today announced that SK Telecom (NYSE: SKM), the largest mobile service provider in Korea, has selected Arbor's Peakflow SP platform in order to maintain the performance and availability of their mobile network and services.

In South Korea, SK Telecom is a leading wireless communications operator, serving more than 26 million subscribers. SK Telecom is recognized as one of the most innovative technology companies in the telecom industry as it continues to invest in building its advanced mobile network, bringing more innovative services to customers.

Managing the rise in mobile data and signaling traffic due to the ever increasing usage of 3G and 4G devices such as smartphones and tablets and protecting their network from DDoS attacks and mobile application anomalies are just some of the many challenges SK Telecom faces on a daily basis.

"We have seen Internet sourced DDoS attacks target our mobile network and service. And lastly, we routinely see mobile application anomalies such as recovery storms, which aren't malicious in nature, but act like DDoS attacks on our mobile network. In any case, this sort of activity puts additional traffic on an already stressed mobile network infrastructure. Therefore it's vital that these attacks be detected and stopped as soon as possible before they impact our customers' quality of experience," said Kevin Hong, Senior Security manager SK Telecom.

"As the amount of smart devices and mobile data traffic continues to rise worldwide, Mobile Network Operators can rely upon the Peakflow SP and TMS solution to detect and stop both malicious and non-malicious DDoS events before they impact the performance and availability of their mobile network and services. SK Telecom recognizes these threats and is implementing solutions that ensure that their customers will have the dynamic user experience they have come to expect from such an innovative company as SK Telecom," said Attley Ng, Arbor Networks vice president for Asia.

Mobile Infrastructure & Service Protection As mobile broadband networks become more like fixed broadband networks, mobile operators will undoubtedly experience the same threats to their mobile subscribers and infrastructure as fixed broadband operators. For example, mobile application anomalies causing recovery or retry storms and Internet-sourced DDoS attacks that target specific mobile infrastructure (i.e. SGSN, GGSN, DNS etc.) are starting to become more common. And it's only a matter of time when mobile operators will be plagued with compromised / infected mobile broadband subscribers that threaten and impact their mobile infrastructure and services.

Unfortunately many mobile operators are unsuccessfully relying upon traditional security devices such as firewalls to stop these threats.

Fortunately Arbor's Peakflow SP and Peakflow SP Threat Management System (TMS) is a comprehensive threat detection and mitigation solution that protects their mobile infrastructure and services from threats.

Backbone, Peering/Transit Edge Visibility and Optimization SK Telecom has invested heavily into the access, backhaul and core of their mobile network. By leveraging IP flow data (i.e. Netflow, sFlow etc.) embedded in network backbone and peering/transit edge routers, Peakflow SP enables SK Telecom to gain cost effective visibility into where their mobile network traffic is going to and coming from.

Botnet protection via the ATLAS(R) Intelligence Feed A new feature within the Peakflow platform is the ATLAS Intelligence Feed (AIF) which delivers deep DDoS signatures in real-time to keep networks protected against hundreds of botnet-fueled DDoS attack toolsets and their variants. This unique feed includes geo-location data and automates the identification of attacks against infrastructure and services from known botnets while ensuring that updates for new threats are automatically delivered without software upgrades. The ATLAS Intelligence Feed enables SK Telecom to directly benefit from the depth and breadth of Arbor's research team.

The Arbor Security Engineering & Response Team (ASERT) is a recognized industry expert when it comes to Internet threat analysis.

ASERT's primary focus is on botnets, which account for a majority of the DDoS attacks on the Internet today. ASERT has unique visibility into DDoS botnets because of its ATLAS infrastructure, which combines a darknet sensor network with traffic data from more than 230 service provider customers around the world. This enormous dataset enables ASERT to develop a unique, globally-scoped view of malicious traffic traversing backbone networks that form the Internet's core. This insight is critical, as botnets are constantly changing and updating to thwart detection.
