Vitesse Chipset Enables Mass Deployment of Fiber-to-the-Home Systems
LOS ANGELES --(Business Wire)--
Vitesse Semiconductor Corporation (NASDAQ:VTSS), a leading provider of
advanced IC solutions for Carrier and Enterprise networks, today
introduced an advanced burst-mode architecture for XG-PON1 Fiber-to-the-Home
(FTTH) applications. Highly integrated with no external components
required, this most advanced edition of Vitesse's PON PRO™ chipset,
comprised of the VSC7719
transimpedance amplifier (TIA) and VSC7729
post amplifier, is aimed at XG-PON1 Optical Line Termination
(OLT) receivers. The chipset exceeds XG-PON1 standards and
enables system vendors and OEMs to easily ramp XG-PON1 systems to volume
production.
The expansion of triple-play services and complex FTTH topology among
major service providers has led to near-universal acceptance of
burst-mode architectures in the central office. As networks move to 10G
and faster backbones, individual links from the central office to
individual Optical Network Units (ONU) vary in length and become
less predictable in performance. Burst-mode receivers increase ONU
performance predictability for the consumer, and help optimize for
high-bandwidth services such as video on demand (VOD).
The new chipset architecture offers on-chip monitoring of burst
power for optimal diagnostics. The set builds on Vitesse's longstanding
experience in physical media dependent (PMD) components for
passive optical network markets, where the VSC7718/7728
PON PRO set has served the GPON market since 2006,
and the earlier VSC7716
TIA (News - Alert) exceeded five million units shipped in recent weeks.
"Few component vendors can offer a settling time capable of meeting GPON
or XG-PON1 OLT requirements," said Dr. Simin Cai, president and chief
executive officer at Go!Foton Corporation, parent company of Zenko
Technologies. "Vitesse has established the expertise to offer proven
burst-mode architectures for this market."
With the PON PRO architecture's integrated chip reset and monitor
features, system builders can achieve burst-mode PON with no
external components required. The set also offers overall performance
that shatters conventional limits with APD sensitivity better than -33
dBm (News - Alert) and overload performance better than -6 dBm, as well as a host of
features designed to simplify the system interface, such as flexible
LVPECL/CML outputs, and a reset through the data interface, which allows
the use of standard TO-can headers in design of a BOSA.
"Today's XG-PON1 solutions are mostly discrete, requiring several
components, and face space constraints and performance challenges that
cannot be supported in volume production. Our new PON PRO architecture
solves builds on Vitesse's field-proven technology to solve these
challenges and advance Ethernet throughout IP Edge networks," said Aditi
Vaghashia, product marketing at Vitesse. "With its high degree of
integration and burst-mode capabilities, Vitesse's solution can be used
in industry-standard SFP modules, making it easy to support our
customers ramping production of their XG-PON1 systems."
Product Packaging and Availability
The VSC7719 is sampling in bare die form, while the VSC7729 will be
offered in a 16-pin 3-mm-square QFP-N package - small enough to fit in a
SFF or SFP module along with a laser driver. More device information is

Vitesse at OFC/NFOEC in Los Angeles
Vitesse is showcasing its latest IC and software solutions at the
OFC/NFOEC Expo, March 6-8, 2012 at the Los Angeles Convention Center in
Corporate Village Room #2157. Meetings are by appointment only.
Attendees are also invited to visit Vitesse's FTTX
Ecosystem showcase at OFC/NFOEC. In collaboration with other
industry leaders including Hisense, Dtech, Zenko, Anritsu (News - Alert), Boardlight,
Etri and Oplink, Vitesse has organized a joint demo, located at the
Light Brigade FTTX Resource Center in Booth #2747. This event will
feature IC's, modules and system level demos for the EPON, GPON, XGPON1
and 40G WDM PON. Learn more about Vitesse's FTTX Ecosystem at www.vitesse.com/fttx.
