WebHostingBuzz to Blackout on January 18th in Protest of SOPA and PIPA

Jan 17, 2012 (PRWeb.com via COMTEX) -- In conjunction with dozens of Internet properties and online communities, UK and US-based web hosting company WebHostingBuzz will be going gray on January 18th to protest upcoming legislation for SOPA and PIPA. For many months, WebHostingBuzz has been a member of the SaveHosting.org coalition, a group of web hosting companies that have congregated to stand against this upcoming legislation, both of which will damage the industry as we all know it.

"WebHostingBuzz's stance is to oppose noth SOPA and PIPA," Matt Russell, CEO of WebHostingBuzz, said. "Neither of these proposed bills have given much thought to the service providers, and are instead lobbied by the huge Hollywood and media firms that are struggling to cope with delivering media through a digital medium." Web hosting providers that handle copyright complaints seriously should not be punished, WebHostingBuzz argues. "The DMCA act provides sufficient legislation for copyright holders to take down pirated material," Russell says. Currently, WebHostingBuzz has a dedicated task force committed to addressing abuse issues, such as piracy, spam, and copyright infringement. These issues are resolved within 12 hours max, though usually much quicker.

"SOPA and PIPA simply cannot exist in their current forms. We ask that Congress revisit the existing DMCA bill or create a new bill that doesn't punish web hosts who are already diligently following existing legislation. Otherwise, the future of the Internet remains at risk," Russell said.
