Newcastle mayor files as a Democrat

Dec 02, 2011 (The Graham Leader - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- [email protected] As he promised, Newcastle Mayor Stephen Sosinski filed to run for Precinct 3 commissioner Tuesday.

But in a surprise move, Sosinski filed to run as a Democrat, not a Republican as he previously stated.

Sosinski said he switched parties not because his political views had changed but because the Republican party in Young County showed little interest in his candidacy.

"I'm a Republican who felt his party wasn't interested in his candidacy," Sosinski said. "I found support, encouragement and inspiration from the Democrat party." Sosinski said his willingness to switch parties is a sign that he will do whatever is needed to make Young County a better place.

"I draw from anyone to solve problems," he said. "If I can't find answers from someone, I move on to the next until I find someone with answers or at least the willingness to help. We don't have time to waste on personal dislikes. There's too much to be done." Sosinski said as commissioner, he would serve the people not any party.

"My opinion of public service is that we, the elected, become the voice and conscience of the people who elected us, not just the party we're affiliated with," he said. "All the people, if you vote for me, will be treated with respect, fairness and urgency not forgotten after I got my way." Sosinski said regardless of what party he runs with, his record proves he would be a good commissioner.

"I jumped into being mayor of Newcastle, I introduced myself to Olney and Graham and made friends, associates and partners," he said. "You can't have cooperation until you have communication. I will not disappear for three years and suddenly reappear to campaign for re-election. Every day should be an effort to prove to the people that I am worthy of their support." Sosinski said his experience as mayor of Newcastle as well as his professional experience in the Air Force and the private sector show he is a successful leader.

"Being a leader means you put aside all your personal desires and dreams and that you become a role model and earn trust and support," Sosinski said. "It's the same in the private sector and with the voter as well. I am applying for a job where the voter will be my boss, not the reverse." Soskinski said he would be the underdog against incumbent Republican Stacey Rogers.

But he said since the general election is not until November, he would have time to introduce himself to the voters.

"I may be a mystery to many people, but my message should be familiar -- do the very best you can, have direction and a goal, a code of fairness and honesty, and with those qualities, you will succeed." ___ (c)2011 The Graham Leader (Graham, Texas) Visit The Graham Leader (Graham, Texas) at grahamleader.com Distributed by MCT Information Services
