BRIEF: AT&T launches Wi-Fi service on IU campus

Oct 11, 2010 (Herald-Times - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- Visitors to the Indiana University campus no longer have to acquire an IU guest account or look for a hot spot if they want to haul out their laptops and get on the Internet.

AT&T reached an agreement with the university to provide Wi-Fi access on the Bloomington and Indianapolis campuses and recently activated the network.

The service is free to AT&T customers with smart phone and Internet plans and available to users on other plans for a $5.99 per day fee.

IU already offers a secure wireless network for its faculty, students and staff. But the additional service will enable visiting scholars, students and others to access the Internet in academic buildings, arts venues and public areas.

"Network connectivity, both wired and wireless, has long been a strength on our campuses, and this new agreement represents the next logical step in our long term strategy," said IU associate vice president Sue Workman said in a prepared statement.

AT&T gained access to the campus through a competitive bidding process.

The national communications company plans to offer the same service at IU's regional campuses in the future.
