Small businesses need to be aware of cybercriminals

Sep 01, 2010 (Breckenridge American - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- Small businesses need to be on the lookout when it comes to protecting their assets online. With various ways of handling online transactions, cybercriminals aren't limited to taking on the big businesses for hacking purposes.

Small businesses need to check into cybersecurity insurance to see if coverage is offered.

Sharon Pendleton of First National Bank Albany Breckenridge said many businesses are not immune to having their assets cracked into by hackers.

"We just want everyone to know that they can be affected by this just as easy as a larger business," she said. "It's something we think would never happen in our town, but it has in others. We want to be prepared just in case it happens. Then we'll know what steps to take in order to keep them running." Pendleton also said that businesses need to be able to protect themselves from types of fraud and phone scams which happen across the internet.

Criminals will offer fraudulent information and then wire money from the businesses' accounts into their own, without being able to be traced.

Identity theft, counterfeit checks, money orders, and also fraudulent debit and ATM cards are also items local businesses need to be aware of.

"We know how important small business is to Breckenridge," Pendlton said. "We just want to make sure they're protected everyday."
