Woman Jailed In Robbery Of Fort Smith Convenience Store

Sep 03, 2010 (Times Record - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- Local police have arrested a woman wanted in connection with a recent armed robbery of a convenience store, a police spokesman said Thursday.

Fort Smith police received information that Jordan S. McElwee, 20, was on her way to an apartment complex at 3400 Duke Ave. in Fort Smith late Wednesday.

Detectives previously identified McElwee as a suspect in the late Tuesday robbery of Flash Market, 4622 Old Greenwood Road, said Sgt. Daniel Grubbs of the Fort Smith Police Department.

The Patrol Division coordinated with the Street Crimes Unit and sent unmarked police cars driven by plain-clothes officers to await McElwee's arrival so they could arrest her on an aggravated robbery arrest warrant, Grubbs said.

The Patrol Division also coordinated with the department's K-9 Unit, which was on standby, he added.

McElwee drove to the apartment complex and was taken into custody without incident, Grubbs said.

The store clerk told police a woman entered the store at about 11:51 p.m. Tuesday, brandished a semi-automatic handgun and demanded money.

The suspect demanded the clerk open the safe after he gave her money from the cash register, according to a police report.

When the clerk told the woman he could not open the safe, she left.

Authorities collected video surveillance tape and placed it into evidence, according to a report.
