Barbados Government: NCST Animation Workshops Next Month

May 21, 2010 (M2 PRESSWIRE via COMTEX) -- The many uses of computer animation technology in education and other spheres of activity will come into sharp focus next month, when the National Council for Science and Technology (NCST), hosts a series of workshops on computer animation technology.Training will be conducted by representatives from Canadian animation company, Toon Boom, and will get under way from Monday, June 7, with a Strategic Planning Workshop at the Errol Barrow Centre for Creative Imagination (EBCCI), University of the West Indies, Cave Hill Campus.

Director of the NCST, Lennox Chandler, said the workshop would expose participants to the rudiments of animation and the possible financial spin-offs from the industry.

He added that gone are the days when animation represented drawings on paper. "Animation is now much more than drawings, but with the use of computer technology, animation has evolved into a full-fledged industry," the Director noted.

Following the success of a similar workshop last year where 20 persons were exposed to the technology, Mr. Chandler intimated that animation would go hand-in- hand with the island's European Union financed national ICT sector strategy.

"One of the things that we [NCST] are aiming to do is the development of high-level ICT skills and computer animation is one such skill. So, this is an area of expertise where young people can create their own businesses, and that's why we are pushing it so much," Mr. Chandler surmised.

The NCST head also disclosed that the Barbados Institute for Management and Productivity (BIMAP), Invest Barbados, the Barbados Community College (BCC) and the Samuel Jackman Prescod Polytechnic (SJPP), have partnered with the NCST on the project.

Workshops on Introductory Animation will be held from June 8 to 12 and June 14 to 18, respectively, at BIMAP, starting at 9:00 a.m. to noon, each day; while the certification programme will be held at the EBCCI, from June 8 to 16, from 2:00 to 7:00 p.m.

These will be followed by an Animation in Education training session for students of the BCC, SJPP and the Cave Hill Campus, from June 21 to 25 and a Train the Trainer workshop, slated for June 16 to 25, from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., each day.
