Shootout leaves 1 dead, 4 hurt: Slain man among 4 who attempted to rob auto store, police say

May 12, 2010 (The Arizona Daily Star - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- An attempted robbery Tuesday night of a north-side business turned into a shootout that left one suspected robber dead and four others wounded, Tucson police said.

The wounded included the three other suspected robbers and the business owner, said Sgt. Fabian Pacheco, a Tucson Police Department spokesman.

The shooting occurred inside M&M Customs, an auto store that sells and installs car alarms and stereos in the 3000 block of North Stone Avenue, south of Fort Lowell Road, Pacheco said.

Shortly after 7 p.m., four men entered the business and tried to rob the owner and an employee, he said.

While the robbers confronted the employee, the owner pulled a gun, and a shootout ensued. At some point, the employee also pulled a gun and fired at the robbers.

When officers arrived, one man, later determined to be one of the robbers, was found dead near the intersection of Stone and East Delano Street. Four other wounded men -- the three other robbery suspects and the owner -- were found in and around the business.

The shop's owner suffered a non-life-threatening wound. One of the robbers suffered life-threatening injuries, Pacheco said.

The two other suspects' wounds were not life-threatening, he said.

No names and ages were released. All four robbery suspects were documented gang members, Pacheco said.

Investigators were trying to determine whether the owner and the robbers knew each other, he said.

Tucson police conducted an extensive search in the surrounding neighborhood for several hours, using dogs, a helicopter and several patrol officers, before determining all the robbery suspects were accounted for.
