Video wins her trip to L.A. for TV show

Mar 26, 2010 (The Lewiston Morning Tribune - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- It was only on a whim that Clarkston's Ronna Kerr clicked the submit button on her computer sending a video of her grandson to TV's "America's Funniest Home Videos." The split-second decision won her a flight to Los Angeles as one of the top three finalists in an episode airing at 7 p.m. Sunday on ABC.

"I have his life chronicled in video," Kerr says about her 3-year-old grandson, Josh Jones.

Kerr records her grandson with her pocket-sized digital camera so that her son, Bret Kasperbauer, can see the moments he misses when his job building wind farms keeps him away for long periods of time.

The show named her video "Breakable Boy." She is not allowed to show the video until after it airs but describes the scene as Josh playing with his aunt, Rebecca Kasperbauer of Las Vegas, who was visiting at Christmas, "and he's not very good about sharing his toys," she concludes.

She also puts it another way.

"This video, when he's in high school ... I so have him." After sending the video to the show's Web site in January, Kerr was asked to submit release forms for each person and voice on the video. In early March she got a call telling her the video was chosen as a top three finalist and she would be flown to Los Angeles for a taping March 13. Accompanying her on the trip were Josh, his mother, Renee Jones of Clarkston, and Brenda Hart, Kerr's co-worker at the Housing Authority of Asotin County.

At the airport, the group was met by a man holding a sign with Kerr's name and was taken to the Manhattan Beach Marriott. The next morning, they were shuttled to the taping and had their makeup done backstage by a woman who told them she'd worked on the soap opera "General Hospital." To keep the equipment cool, the studio where the filming took place was "like walking into a freezer," Kerr says. At the end, the roughly 300 people in the audience voted for the $10,000 prize winner.

Whether Kerr won anything besides a free trip and a blue T-shirt that says "Funny Since 1989" will be revealed Sunday.

Josh, an active towhead with an easy smile, doesn't have anything to say about winning or losing. Foremost in his mind are flying on a plane and skyscrapers that "go up and up." ------ Bauer may be contacted at [email protected] or (208) 848-2263.
