Nasscom's skills registry drive in full swing

NEW DELHI, Nov 19, 2009 (The Economic Times - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- Nasscom's Data Security Council of India (DSCI) on Tuesday said that almost a quarter of 2.3 million Indian IT-ITeS workforce has been registered under the National Skills Registry.

"We have registered almost 6 lakh IT-ITeS employees under the national database. We plan to cover the entire IT workforce under the database in 12-18 months," DSCI CEO Kamlesh Bajaj told ET.

"The aim of the the National Skills Registry is to build confidence amongst offshore clients on outsourcing to Indian workers," he added.

Meanwhile, different BPO trade unions have objected to this programme for violation of individual privacy.

"If an employee's background is clean he / she should not be afraid of joining the NSR. It also helps large companies when they want to hire a large number of people in limited time. If a large project comes, sometimes companies don't want to go through the long process of getting background checks done before they hire. That's where NSR steps helps," Mr Bajaj said.

DSCI on Tuesday also received a grant of $50,000 by anti-virus software major McAfee for its efforts towards data protection. DSCI is involved in creation of awareness in the IT industry about the importance and measures for data protection.

It also carries out research in the field of data privacy and protection in the context of Indian industry.
