'Ordnance Survey launches mobile phone location service'

Nov 04, 2009 (DMEUROPE via COMTEX) -- UK national mapping agency Ordnance Survey has launched a new mobile phone-based locating service called Locatorz. Using Ordnance Survey maps, the service can locate any person that has the application on their mobile phone, and has given permission to be monitored, to within 10 metres of their position. The online service is built on Ordnance Survey's OS OpenSpace online mapping system. Once installed, Locatorz uses a mobile phone's GSM connection to transmit an individual's position by sending a GPS signal to the Locatorz server, which plots the information on to an Ordnance Survey map and sends it to a viewable, secure internet page. Information is then updated every two minutes for complete accuracy, as well as providing a movement record, allowing smooth panning and zooming to locate the person.

The Locatorz system costs GBP 50 per year.
