Appanoose County writer begins self-publishing
Sep 26, 2009 (Daily Iowegian - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) --
KaSandra Van Veen of Moravia has recently published her first book, a collection of poetry, through the online self-publisher, lulu.com.
Van Veen, who publishes under the pen name KaSandra Kelly has been writing since high school and indeed one of the poems in the collection is from that era. The book, titled "I Am Me" includes around 30 poems written over the last 10 years and is 40 pages long.
Van Veen had gone to the Web site allpoetry.com to get her work peer-reviewed when she discovered lulu.com and decided to publish a collection of poetry.
Now that she has finished that project Van Veen has begun fleshing out a short novel that she also hopes to publish. She is interested in getting a publisher to put the book out, but is also looking into self-publishing the book, which is tentatively titled "Me, Myself and I" and will be about 160 pages.
The book will deal with a family caught up in an abusive situation and is being written in five parts. It is partly inspired by Van Veen's own childhood, but has a much darker ending than her own situation did.
The first three parts will be told from three different perspectives, that of the babysitter, the mother and the little girl respectively. Part four will be made up of journal entries written by the little girl and part five will detail the reactions of townspeople in the aftermath of the incident, which is the main issue of the story.
Although the novel first started as a short story written in college, Van Veen says she didn't return to it until she had begun working on her book of poetry
Van Veen says she has used writing and art as emotional outlets and a way to work through emotional issues since she was young and plans to continue writing. She probably won't focus on poetry, but will instead move towards writing more stories and novels.
Van Veen's book of poetry, "I Am Me," can be reviewed and ordered at http://www.lulu.com/content/lulustudio-photo-book/I-Am-Me/7575221.
