The Fayetteville Observer, N.C., Catherine Pritchard column: Art imitates life on TV soaps

Sep 03, 2009 (The Fayetteville Observer - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- Q: Are any of the stars on "The Young and the Restless," "As the World Turns" and "Guiding Light" married to each other? Why is "Guiding Light" being canceled? -- B.W., Fayetteville A: Those CBS soaps feature a few real-life couples.
Story continues below ↓

Among them: Amelia Heinle and Thad Luckinbill of Y&R and Kelley Minigham Hensley and John Hensley of ATWT.

You might know them better as Victoria Newman and J.T. Hellstrom (who are married on Y&R) and Emily Stewart and Holden Snyder.

Some of the other actors are married to former cast members who left the show in question for one reason or another.

For example, Crystal Chappell of GL (Olivia Spencer) is married to Michael Sabatino (ex-Vince Russo). Note: They'll be back on the same soap this fall -- NBC's "Days of Our Lives." Chappell will reprise her one-time role of Carly Manning, and Sabatino has already returned to his one-time role of Lawrence Alamain.

Colleen Zenk-Pinter of ATWT (Barbara Ryan) is married to Mark Pinter (ex-Brian McColl).

As for GL -- which started airing on radio in 1937 and moved to TV in 1952 -- it will air its last episode Sept. 18. The soap was axed because of sagging ratings. It will be replaced by a new version of another one-time stalwart of daytime TV, the game show "Let's Make a Deal." -- C.P.

Q: A company called MFIAncestry.com is debiting my bank account for some reason. How can I contact them to get them to stop? -- J.S., Fayetteville A: You can contact the company at (800) 262-3787 or through www.tgn.com.

You seem to be signed up for a subscription to an online genealogical information service -- probably Ancestry.com. That site is owned by The Generations Network, which used to be called MyFamily.com Inc. (thus the MFI in your bill statement).

Might you have signed up for a trial membership and forgot to cancel in time? If so, your subscription would be automatically renewed whenever it came up unless you canceled in time.

If you didn't ever sign up, and feel you're being improperly billed, you can file a complaint with the N.C. Attorney General's consumer protection office. Its number is (877) 566-7226. -- C.P.

Q: Can you give me Tom Brokaw's address? -- T.G., Maxton A: Write him in care of NBC News, 30 Rockefeller Plaza, New York, NY 10112.

Brokaw, the former anchor of "NBC Nightly News," remains a special correspondent for the network. -- C.P.
