China Telecom to roll out thousand-yuan 3G handsets in Sept.
BEIJING, Jul 06, 2009 (Xinhua via COMTEX) --
China Telecom (0728.HK; CHA.NYSE)
plans to roll out low-cost 3G handsets
each at a price of less than 1,000 yuan in September of this year,
according to Ma Daojie, general manager of the telecom operator's
subsidiary sales channel Tianyi Telecom Terminal Co., Ltd.
China Telecom made centralized procurement of 3.6 million
units of 3G handsets in cooperation with cell phone dealers to deal
with such problems as limited choices and high prices of handset on
the market.
Statistics show that, as of early June, sales volume of China
Telecom's 3G cellphones amounted to over 100,000 units, one million
pieces of network interface cards and more than 30,000 units of
netbooks were sold.
The carrier's customization of those thousand-yuan 3G handsets
expects to make them more affordable and pervading.
But China Telecom was also ambitious for medium- and high-end
market.
Ma revealed that the telecom operator would launch a bid for
purchasing smartphones in August to enrich the medium- and high-end
3G terminal market.
In response to the market hearsay that China Telecom was
planning to introduce the renowned smartphone Blackberry, Ma said
that the carrier would not only support domestic manufacturers to
produce renowned products, but also expected to introduce in such
products, showing foreign manufacturers the huge market potential in
China so they may lower the access threshold.
