HIGH-END SERVERS SAW STEEPER DEMAND DROP IN FY08: JAPAN'S JEITA
TOKYO, Jun 05, 2009 (AsiaPulse via COMTEX) --
Japanese demand for higher-model
servers and mainframe computers nosedived in the year ended
March 31, 2009, according to data released Thursday by the
Japan Electronics and Information Technology Industries
Association (JEITA).
Shipments of Unix servers sank 30.1 per cent from a year
earlier to 29,922 units, while those of mainframe computers
declined 15.7 per cent to 601 units.
Demand for low-priced offerings, meanwhile, held up better,
with shipments of Intel architecture, or IA, servers dropping
just 2.9 per cent to 317,132 units.
As their performance continues to improve, more IA servers
are finding use in backbone information systems in place of
higher-priced Unix servers and mainframe computers. With
businesses curbing information technology investments, JEITA
anticipates that the shift to IA servers from more expensive
servers and mainframe computers will continue in the
foreseeable future.
With their prices sliding amid intensifying competition,
however, IA server shipments in yen terms decreased 9.5 per
cent on the year to 231.9 billion yen (US$2.4 billion) in
fiscal 2008.
