(By Dr. Joe Duarte) In the Land of Make Believe, aka the Stock Market,
Tuesday was a day to cover shorts and trade on the long side. More than
for any other reason, stocks went up because, they simply stopped going
down. And while that s no guarantee that a lasting rally will
materialize, it s not something to ignore altogether.
It s foolish to be anything but pragmatic here. As a trader, the goal
is not see whether the glass is half full or half empty, but to see if
there s any fluid left in it. And on Tuesday there was fluid at the
bottom and more by the end of the day.
There is likely to be lots of volatility ahead. Yet, the best-case
scenario would be one in which the S&P 500 bottom is in at Monday s
low, just below 1100.
There are some subtle technical findings that suggest that some kind of
low is in place, such as the fact that the MACD histogram s bottom on
Monday was higher than the bottom that it made in mid-September despite
Monday s S&P close being lower. This is a positive divergence and
suggests that Monday s 777-point drop in the Dow Jones Industrial
average was indeed the panic bottom that investors have been looking
for. The bottom in the MACD histogram is also evident in the RSI
oscillator.
Another sign that points to Monday as being a potentially important day
is the fact that volume was low. Contrary to the mainstream viewpoint
that the low volume during the selling means little, we look at it as a
potential sign of the sellers having been totally exhausted.
To be sure, there is plenty of overhead resistance, especially at 1260
and near 1335. And lots can happen in the next few weeks as the
election heats up. Yet, it s not very smart to ignore the fact that we
may have seen the bottom. As with any important washout, the really big
buying opportunity comes a few days after the initial bottom. That
means that by Friday, the day of the employment report, we should have
a much better idea as to whether the worst is actually over.
