(By Genevieve Hawkins) The coming holiday shortened week may result in
low volume on the markets, but this could create dramatic swings as
investors grapple with the effects of Hurricane Gustav and the
Republican National Convention. Last week's volatility was capped by a
loss on the Dow of 1.47%, while the S&P 500 dropped 1.37% and the
NASDAQ dropped 1.83%, though the indexes were all slightly up for the
month of August. With Hurricane Gustav dominating headlines over
international stock market drops and the Republican National
Convention, it should be a news filled week. Market participants may be
interested in readings about unemployment and reports from the
beleaguered banking sector in the coming sessions, but uncertainty
continues to loom. Although Gustav made landfall as a weaker storm than
Katrina, the effects may still be widespread, and a wild swing in the
price of crude oil up or down could weigh on the market. Initial
exuberance over Gustav's weaker entrance may be hampered in the coming
week by continued bad banking sector news. Or worries about the drop of
Asian markets on Monday may lead US stocks down at first, then up later
in the week. Either way there are likely to be erratic swings.
It's doubtful that any clear cut direction will emerge during the next
several sessions.
