Livescribe Pulse(TM) Smartpen Heads Back to School

OAKLAND, Calif. --(Business Wire)-- Students heading to college this fall face many pressures associated with keeping up in class - from note taking to studying to keeping organized and even prioritizing deadlines. This year, they can alleviate some of the classroom stress with the Pulse smartpen from Livescribe, Inc. (www.livescribe.com).

The Pulse smartpen is a computer within a pen that captures handwriting and simultaneously records audio and synchronizes it to the writing. Users simply tap on their notes to replay what was recorded from the exact moment they were writing, so they never miss a word they hear, write, or speak. Using pre-printed controls at the bottom of the dot paper notebooks, students can fast forward, rewind, jump ahead, pause or even speed up or slow down the audio recordings to easily access information from a lecture or study group.

Using a USB docking cradle, students can upload their notes and audio into their computers to save, search for keywords or share with friends and classmates. Every registered Pulse user receives 250MB of online storage to upload and share notes and audio as interactive Flash movies or PDF files. Users can choose to e-mail or share their interactive notes - termed "pencasts" - through the Livescribe community, selected contacts or other sites like Facebook.

What Students are Saying

Quotes pulled from Livescribe's Facebook page - ">http://www.new.facebook.com/livescribe.

  -- James Madison University student
"That is SO COOL. I am blown away."
  -- Texas Tech University student
"I won one from the group and I have to say it, it's the most
amazing thing ever! I absolutely love it, with the notebook
they include I never miss a word."
  -- Northeastern University student
"I just got mine. It's great. I can't wait to start taking
    notes with it."
  -- Creighton University student
"I have to say that as much as I love USING the pen, the best
part is showing it off. People are AMAZED."

What Professors are Saying

Dr. Andy Van Schaack, Vanderbilt University professor and Livescribe adviser, suggests that the smartpen has a significant impact in the classroom. "Because of the fast pace of most lectures, students usually have to decide whether they listen to the lecture or focus on taking accurate notes--they can't do both well. With the smartpen they can take fewer notes knowing that they can go back to them later and replay the audio," said Van Schaack. "As a teacher, I've discovered Pulse is less distracting than students who take notes using a laptop computer."
