Novell Intros Log Manager Tool as Software Appliance and Network Management Solution

July 01, 2010

Software appliances are the next evolutionary step for software delivery and network management, allowing hardware to be de-coupled from the software creating adaptable mechanisms for deployment and management, says Charles Kolodgy, research vice president at IDC (News - Alert).

Novell, a provider of workload management solutions, announced the launch of such an appliance, Novell (News - Alert) Sentinel Log Manager 1.1, which the company calls as the industry's first log management solution available as a software appliance.

Novell Sentinel Log Manager 1.1, according to Kolodgy, gives enterprises the flexibility to deploy security applications. It can directly leverage the increasingly virtualized infrastructure within data centers, and it is capable of deploying to cloud computing environments to expand the potential utilization of security information and event management.

An integral part of Novell's security management portfolio, Novell Sentinel Log Manager simplifies compliance with regulatory requirements and improves an organization's security posture.

Sentinel Log Manager is built using SUSE Studio, a free, Web-based appliance building solution from Novel that allows users to quickly build complete software appliances in just minutes.

SUSE Studio has been recently granted the 2010 American Business Award for Best New Product or Service Computer Hardware or Services, the company said in an announcement.

Novell Sentinel Log Manager includes a free SUSE Linux Enterprise subscription and SLM software update service. With this, Sentinel Log Manager helps customers significantly reduce deployment cost and installation complexity in today's highly distributed and virtualized IT environments, the company said.

Customers require solutions without the added expense or burden of replacing existing infrastructure. By deploying Novell Sentinel Log Manager as a software appliance, customers can get started in minutes and eliminate time-consuming maintenance processes with its self-updating features.

Product enhancements include distributed search capabilities to simplify accessing event data by enabling customers to search events from several on- or off-premise servers for compliance management and forensics investigations.
Novell Sentinel Log Manager also uses non-proprietary storage technology to deliver unsurpassed data integrity and greater storage flexibility resulting in overall reduced cost and complexity, the company said.

The appliance delivers immediate functionality without requiring expensive proprietary hardware appliances, enabling customers to optimize their virtual infrastructure investments.

Novell Sentinel Log Manager easily integrates with Novell Sentinel and the Novell Identity Management suite providing organizations an easy path to identity-aware security event and information management. Real-time monitoring and remediation of network events allow customers to correlate identities, systems and data to deliver a centralized.

Novell integrates mixed IT environments, allowing people and technology to work as one.
