6WIND Joins eNsemble Multi-Core Alliance

April 29, 2010

In a sign of the network's increasingly important role in business operations, 6WIND, a provider of packet processing software for embedded systems, this week announced that it has joined the eNsemble Multi-Core Alliance. The alliance is an industry organization that promotes innovations in multi-core parallel processing platforms and software development.

Importantly, the Multi-Core Alliance also serves as the foundation upon which original equipment manufacturers or OEMs can more effectively and more efficiently develop high-performance networking equipment using multi-core processors.

For Eric Carmes, CEO at 6WIND, the industry initiative will help drive the rapid adoption of high-performance multi-core processors.

"Our 6WINDGate software maximizes the packet processing performance of networking and telecom equipment based on multi-core processors," Carmes said. "We are committed to continuing our leadership position in multi-core software for next-generation networks."

6WINDGate has been deployed by tier-one networking and telecom OEMs on a global scale. It provides a comprehensive Linux networking software solution that can deliver optimized 7-10x packet processing performance. It helps OEMs in developing multi-core-based products that can offer integration and energy efficiency also.

Those technologies are becoming more important as cloud-based tools proliferate and organizations from SMBs to enterprises rely on the network not just for communications but also for business operations.

Sources at 6WIND say that their offering is fully compatible with standard Linux APIs and that developers can migrate standard Linux applications onto new platforms based on 6WINDGate without redesigning or rewriting existing software. That helps ease the transition from single to multi-core platforms.

"6WIND is a recognized leader in high-performance packet processing software that is optimized for multi-core processors, and we welcome 6WIND as a valuable member of the eNsemble Multi-Core Alliance," said Behrooz Abdi, executive vice president and general manager at NetLogic Microsystems (News - Alert), a founding member of the eNsemble Multi-Core Alliance.

Abdi emphasized that as the community includes technology innovators who are experts in their respective fields, the alliance creates a platform on which these developers can innovate to create new, breakthrough applications. These applications can leverage the capabilities of the superior performance and functionality of multi-core processors.

The 6WINDGate solution maximizes the packet processing performance of single- and multi-core platforms. This enables customers to focus on their own value-added software applications and reduce time-to-market for their products. 6WIND partners with suppliers of board-level products, operating systems and embedded software products to create a complete global system-level ecosystem.
