New SilverCreek SNMP Counter Tests Suite Offers Compliance Testing in One Integrated Package

August 31, 2012

InterWorking Labs recently introduced the new SNMP Counter Tests Suite. The latest offering from InterWorking Labs has been designed to provide accurate billing and network monitoring for service providers equipment as it allows robust conformance and compliance testing, all in a single integrated package. The company is a specialist provider of application performance solutions for embedded systems and mobile, cloud, WAN applications.

In a release Chris Wellens, president & CEO, InterWorking Labs, said, "If you have ever received a wildly incorrect bill from your cell phone provider or your ISP, you have probably been the victim of an improperly implemented SNMP counter. Very often, service providers depend on SNMP counters in routers and switches to compute traffic consumption and utilization by their customers. An incorrect counter means an incorrect bill. With the new SilverCreek SNMP Counters Test Suite, service providers can verify that they are properly invoicing their customers based on actual utilization."

The tests are based on the new standards for IPv6 - aware counters. By integrating with the Scapy software packet generator, packets (normal and malformed) that are generated are a checked to ensure proper operation. The entire process which is seamless from start to finish begins with SilverCreek directing Scapy to forward specific packets to the networked device undergoing testing.

The device then has to develop valid counters and report the correct count back to SilverCreek which enables easy verification of accurate counting and performance of incoming packets by networked devices. This makes it easy for service providers to manage information and generate accurate customer bills.

The IPv6 MIBs (management information base) categorizes information necessary for management, troubleshooting and diagnosing IPv6 network operation: RFC 4293 Management Information Base for the Internet Protocol (IP); RFC 4022 Management Information Base for the Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) and RFC 4113 Management Information Base for the User Datagram Protocol (UDP (News - Alert)).

By integrating with Scapy, InterWorking Labs has developed a SNMP counter testing suite which allows clients to mitigate the need for learning the workings of complex multiple products. Users instead simply focus on ensuring that IPv6 - aware counters are operating properly. Service providers can be sure that the traffic consumption and utilization statistics are all correct thereby allowing for accurate customer billing.
