If you were too busy last week collecting Gartner (News - Alert) IT Infrastructure, Operations & Management Summit trade show swag, you might have missed an informative session about infrastructure and operations management tools – a session in which panel leaders mapped out the major companies in the space. But if you were there, you might have learned that among the IBM’s, CA’s and Microsoft’s of the world, OPNET Technologies (News - Alert) is being touted as a vendor to “look out for” in the space.

And for OPNET Technologies – a provider of network diagramming and application performance management offerings – the news could not have meant more to the company.

“The message is we’ve been growing,” Marvin Roush, associate vice president of sales at OPNET Technologies, told TMCnet following the trade show. “We are growing and we are winning a lot of business from some of the legacy application performance management (APM (News - Alert)) vendors and we are certainly very competitive even against the new guys out there. We are in a sweet spot.”

While at the show, OPNET was committed to shedding light on its competitive offerings, from its NetMapper network diagramming solution to AppMapper, a solution that automatically produces run-time application dependency maps.

For people who are in charge of data centers, NetMapper and AppMapper are a perfect fit as they grant managers visibility into their networks that they otherwise wouldn’t enjoy. Moreover, the solutions help those managers looking to migrate to the cloud and understand the experience as they transition to the cloud.

The process of transitioning to the cloud was hotly debated at the Gartner IT Infrastructure, Operations & Management Summit as participants kept discussing their hybrid and private cloud plans and cloud migration concerns.

“They need a view of the underlying network infrastructure. We can show them the logical views as well as the physical views and the topology of the network,” Roush said. “Everyone likes NetMapper; it’s eye candy.”

“Data center managers spend a lot of time trying to document the network and the interconnectivity of router switches and the only way to do it is to get that configuration and very rich information from the actual devices and they don’t have it right now,” he added. “And, sadly and strangely we don’t have a lot of competitors so NetMapper for us is almost like a must have in your tool set if you are a data center manager.”

The recent trade show also provided an opportunity for OPNET to discuss with participants its recent acquisition of Clarus Systems (News - Alert), a privately held software company headquartered in Redwood City, Calif. The acquisition expands OPNET’s product portfolio for application and network performance management.

Clarus software, a provider of end-to-end service management for Enterprise VoIP, unified communications, and TelePresence video, offers an award-winning solution suite, ClarusIPC Plus+ which maximizes service performance and availability through automated testing, performance monitoring, configuration management, and business intelligence reporting. According to OPNET, Clarus fits right into OPNET’s current solutions.

“We make very smart acquisitions,” Roush said. “Clarus Systems fit beautifully in our mini-suite.”
