Managed Networks Report: Spacenet President Discusses Networking, IT Trends

By Marisa Torrieri, TMCnet Editor

The demand for IP-based applications and networks that can handle a heavy data load has never been greater.

Neither has the competition, as enterprises making an investment in new technology seek solutions that will help them stay competitive and drive a higher ROI.

Lucky for us, Glenn Katz, president and COO of Spacenet, a managed networks provider that’s leveraging its satellite-technology experience to focus on bundling wireline and wireless services for enterprise customers, spoke about some of the most important IT/network trends on his radar.

“For enterprise organizations what we’re seeing is an increase in applications that are driving a higher ROI on the business itself,” Katz told TMCnet during a recent podcast interview. “Some of these applications, they’re all mostly IP-based, and they usually require a fair amount of bandwidth.”

Some business-critical applications go beyond just point of sale; for example, taking real-time marketing information that the enterprise will use and making adjustments to increase sales.

And what that usually does is lead to higher network availability.

“We’re seeing an increase in where retailers before would have let’s say one form of communication to their particular retail locations or office locations,” Katz told TMCnet. “We’re seeing now they’re coming back and asking for something close to 99.99 percent availability. The only real way to get that is to diversify that a little bit, and create an alternative path.”

The third big trend, that’s getting a lot of hype in the press is cloud computing, the act of taking mission-critical applications off your data center and putting them onto someone else’s data center, or the Internet.

And that requires higher network availability requirements and diversity requirements, Katz said.
