VoIP Continues to Grow

By Jessica Kostek, TMCnet Channel Editor
A recent study by Infonetics Research (News - Alert), an international market research and consulting firm, said that VoIP phone shipments have grown 25 percent, with IP softphone deliveries more than doubling.

Worldwide IP-PBX (News - Alert) deployments also increased. The firm’s report said the IP-PBX market experienced a 9 percent growth in revenue and 7 percent in lines. As a whole, the telephony market grew by 8 percent between the second and third quarter of 2008, hitting $2.6 billion.

Additionally, Don Witt, president of cyLogistics (News - Alert), said in an article he wrote in December for TMC’s INTERNET TELEPHONY magazine that even though the stock market was plunging and the economy slowing, VoIP would continue to grow.

Witt said, "More and more executives will be under the gun to cut costs. There are a number of ways to cut costs but one way to cut costs tends to jump out at you -- the PHONE BILL. This will force many companies to take the digital/VoIP plunge. As a result, VoIP sales will increase significantly over the next year or two."

“The stock market crash has effectively pulled in the VoIP growth curve by 6-12 months or more. As identified in the Post-Melt Down chart, VoIP sales may increase by 200-300 percent over previous forecasts. Thus, next year's VoIP growth can be expected to jump from four percent to eight percent or 12 percent or more next year," he added.

Reports from Infonetics Research and theories from Witt seem to be accurate, according to another study by the research company.

TMCnet reported on a study released in May of this year by one firm that found the global VoIP services market grew 33 percent in 2008 to $30.8 billion.

Infonetics’ biannual VoIP and UC Services and Subscribers reported that businesses continued to switch from traditional telephone service to hosted VoIP services. Companies are continuously being drawn to VoIP, the report finds, because of its cost savings and productivity enhancing features.
