According to industry journal DatacenterDynamics, renovations are now complete for European data center operator LCL Belgium’s data center in Erembodegem, Aalst, Belgium, which was purchased last month.
The renovations saw the installation of new cooling technology, which “allows centrally produced cooling water to be divided across the data center, taking it as close to possible to the servers,” according to the journal.
Reducing data center power usage is becoming a bigger priority for data center administrators these days. In a recent White House blog post, Steven VanRoekel , federal chief information officer, said the government’s goal is to close “at least 40 percent of data centers,” as part of what he described as “an effort to [cut] spending on wasteful, underused hardware, software and operations... shrink our energy and real estate footprints.”
The goal, he said, is for the government to close 1,080 centers by 2015.
LCL’s DataCloud data center is a fairly sizeable operation, covering 1,200 square meters, and it was redesigned to have the room to grow a further 1,300 square meters. Data center officials say the renovation turned it “from a cloud center to a carrier-neutral data center,” similar to two others the company owns for markets in Diegem and Antwerp.
LCL Managing Director Laurens van Reijen said the new LCL data center was located in part to offer backup for companies operating out of its other sites. This “meets the requirement of 30 kilometers distance between both,” van Reijen said.
The new data center has been made blade server ready to cater for growing data density and has a new electrical setup to provide more room for racks and suites, as well as a new high voltage transformer, five emergency generators and UPS.
One company offering ways to better monitor data center power and to improve data center efficiency is Server Technology (News - Alert), which sells products for the data center equipment cabinet. The data center power distribution company sells their power management products to some of the largest companies in the world, and offer a full range of power distribution products and power monitoring software.
