Cloud Storage: Can Google Turn GDrive Into 2012's Biggest Tech Winner?

By Oliver VanDervoort, Contributing Writer

As we get closer and closer to 2012, it appears the technology that we might be talking the most about in the New Year is cloud storage. Every major tech company seems to want to get their own version of cloud storage off the ground. Some companies are going to be more successful than others, but one company could become the undisputed king of this particular sector. That title would also put it one step ahead of one of its biggest rivals. Google (News - Alert) is looking set to parlay its Gdrive into something that consumers will turn to en masse.

Of course, with a massive amount of customers looking towards Google to handle their cloud storage business, there are a couple of things that will keep the company on top. Google Drive, or GDrive, has actually been a product that has been rumored for several years now. In the meantime, Google has launched a sort of version of what GDrive could be with their Google Docs. While this will only allow people to upload documents, people are already using it as more than an online word or spreadsheet creator. One report says that 53 percent of what is housed on Google Docs is programs such as Microsoft (News - Alert) documents and PDFs that were uploaded as a way to back them up.

If Google truly wants to launch GDrive and immediately be crowned king of the cloud storage then it needs to make it easy to use on all our devices. Google should be thinking DropBox but better known and accesible. Google should make sure that the GDrive has a way to be used easily on a desktop, and that the particular interface is also usable when they are looking to hook up to the GDrive from a device like their Android (News - Alert) phone or a device that runs the ChromeOS.

If the company really wanted to make sure that they were the kings of this situation, they should also make sure that it actually becomes easier to link up with Google Music and other multimedia sites that Google owns like Picasa and Google +. If the company can find a way to do this in a fashion that won't confuse its users, it could be the biggest winner of the year.
