The Cloud Expo in New York City earlier this month brought some of the most informed executives and thought leaders in the cloud arena together to discuss the changes and developments coming from all things cloud computing-related.

TMC’s (News - Alert) CEO Rich Tehrani sat down with many representatives from companies who were there to learn about the latest improvements and progress from cloud solution providers. In one interview, Tehrani met with Chad Thibodeau, director of product management for Cleversafe, a company that offers data storage and archiving solutions.

“We are really targeting companies that have large data sets, ones that want to archive anywhere from hundreds of terabytes to petabytes…We do what we call ‘dispersal algorithms,’” stated Thibodeau. “In essence, it’s taking a file, slicing that file up into multiple unique segments, and then storing those segments in storage nodes.”

As a provider of cloud storage solutions, Thibodeau remarked that the company is moving away from RAID and replication as Cleversafe believes those methods of data protection are outdated and no longer useful.

“We’re designed for an archived kind of environment, very good for files that are over around 100k… What we’re finding is customers coming to us saying ‘I’ve got a lot of data I want to archive, I’m not sure how long I have to retain it, I want to do it in the most cost effective way possible, and I don’t want to replicate,” added Thibodeau.
