Cloud Computing and the Impact on Application Performance Monitoring

By David Sims, TMCnet Contributing Editor

Have you implemented cloud monitoring tools but not achieving benefits of operating your business in the cloud? Perhaps your cloud monitoring tools are rebooting your system over and over.

According to industry observer Anne Lee, some of the problems associated with cloud computing are that since it’s not run on your network you don’t own the hardware, and when issues arise, they’re not within your control to fix.

If you’re using “old-fashioned tools” for monitoring your computer system’s performance, Lee says, chances are you’re having to perform complicated setting alterations, and when you do that you have to reboot the system -- as much as 100 times per day, more often than you realize: “It is not uncommon for an organization to restart and close down upward of 100 instances per day, equivalent to a brand-new instance every five minutes.”

Such frenetic boot-up problems don’t give the system the time it needs to get all its testing done, “making monitoring data less valuable.”

Basically put, if you’re serious about cloud computing, you need monitoring tools that are up to the task. And no matter if you’re using cloud computing or not, if your system isn’t giving you the data mining that’s bringing ROI to your organization, you need to revamp your monitoring anyway.

According to industry pros Monitis, cloud monitoring has a number of benefits -- starting with the ability to costs itself, such as those incurred using such options as Amazon Web Services (News - Alert).

Also, a good cloud monitoring setup will use external monitors and provide notifications with what Monitis officials describe as “an automatic discovery process for newly launched URLs.” Done correctly, this minimizes the time and hassle of setting up other end-user monitoring services. It will also automate the agent deployment on each newly launched virtual server, Monitis officials say, not only saving time on setup, but increasing the quality and range of level monitoring and performance analysis.

A good cloud monitor, Monitis officials say, should also keep track of the number of running instances and installed software, “along with other parameters,” giving you better “configuration management of large numbers of servers in the cloud.”
