IT Directors Need Application Performance Monitoring Tools as More Applications Move to the Cloud

By Susan J. Campbell, TMCnet Contributing Editor

Like all technology evolutions, the cloud is increasing the need for new performance tools. As more and more companies are looking at ways to grow their day-to-day operations, the cloud and its mission-critical solutions are becoming intensive.

A recent survey, as highlighted in this IDEV News piece, has uncovered key insights behind trends in IT directors’ drive to acquire new application performance monitoring tools. These top level executives know the basic need and desire to shift all operations to the cloud, but many are unsure of how to get there. The same professionals asked questions of David Link, chief executive officer of ScienceLogic (News - Alert), the firm responsible for the survey.

“Enterprises are clearly moving to cloud in significant numbers,” Link said in the IDEV News piece. “With so much growth to come, we think this survey shows that IT operations managers are now trying to figure out just which apps are right for the cloud and also how they can use the cloud to get a lower cost compute model that can easily scale up and scale down.”

Nearly 79 percent of IT directors told ScienceLogic that they were running at least one production application in the cloud. An additional 64 percent are operating less than a quarter of production applications in the cloud. The numbers clearly illustrate that runtime is surpassing the test phase.

Despite the high numbers, many IT managers are still leery of moving all or most of their applications to the cloud or even hybrid clouds. Link said clearly shows the unknowns that surround cloud-based  applications. He explained that customers in mid-sized and large enterprises are considering how to plan for on-going application performance and not just developments and operations in the cloud. This includes management, monitoring and meeting SLAs.

In order to manage any cloud-based operation, Link’s survey shows IT managers are going to have to invest in its people, tools and technology. The survey showed that 65 percent of IT execs plan to leverage on-premise tools to enable application performance monitoring for services they run in the cloud and another 64 percent are anticipating a need for new management tools with the integration of systems and services to cloud-based solutions.

Another 47 percent are expecting they will need to train their existing IT operations staff on cloud-based application performance monitoring tools instead of adding staff. Still another 31 percent expressed the need to still hire additional staff with the necessary cloud training.

If IT managers are ready to invest and move forward with cloud-based solutions, Link said those same execs still want some strong assurances that it will be as dependable as what they’re used to using. Less than one in five IT operations managers plan to use an outside managed service provider to provide 100 percent of what they need to manage cloud-based mission-critical apps, according to the survey.

A mere 17 percent will depend on their cloud service providers and provide performance metrics. Even those with some management, according to Link, will still need to offer a whole new set of tools and instrumentations.

So the survey shows that IT managers, at least 22 percent, aren’t sure how they will proceed when dealing with the cloud. Link suggests that as those same managers educate themselves about the reliability of the cloud, more and more will make the switch and invest more applications in the cloud.
