Mellanox and Corvil Demonstrate Latency Measurements at Nanosecond Resolution

By Rajani Baburajan, TMCnet Contributor

Mellanox (News - Alert) Technologies, a supplier of high-performance, end-to-end connectivity solutions for data center servers and storage systems, in association with Corvil, a provider of application performance monitoring systems for high-performance trading and market data, is jointly demonstrating at an industry event.

The companies will showcase live latency measurements at nanosecond resolution. It will include the industry-low, sub 300ns latency performance of its recently introduced 10/40Gb Ethernet (GbE) switch using Corvil’s market-leading latency management system, CorvilNet.

The SX1000-series 10/40GbE switches are based on the company’s SwitchX switch silicon ICs. It delivers up to 2.88Tb/s of switching in a single 1U device. The SX1000-series delivers industry-leading capabilities in bandwidth performance, density, scalability, latency (230ns) and power, company officials said.

“We are pleased to work with Corvil and utilize CorvilNet to demonstrate Mellanox’s SX1000-series of 10/40GbE switches’ industry-leading Ethernet latency performance,” said Asaf Somekh (News - Alert), vice president of solution marketing at Mellanox Technologies, in a statement.

“Mellanox's solutions for financial services repeatedly demonstrate lower application latency, higher application throughput, and higher scalability in real-world benchmark testing,” Somekh added.

Company officials said nanosecond-level measurement is crucial for co-located trading systems where component latencies of a few microseconds can have a material impact on system performance.

While response times have been reduced to sub-millisecond range in many cases, traders are becoming more interested in monitoring small changes in response time and how they might affect the behavior of their strategies. This is because it is relative speed, rather than absolute response time, that really determines trading success, company said.

“Components of the trading loop are now achieving latencies in the low microsecond range. This necessitates the use of nanosecond-level measurement to gauge their performance,” said Donald O’Sullivan, vice president of Product Management at Corvil, in a statement.

“CorvilNet is unique in its ability to monitor latency with nanosecond precision for electronic trading applications and infrastructure,” O’Sullivan added. “We are delighted that CorvilNet has been used to validate the performance of Mellanox’s 10/40GbE switch.”

Mellanox recently announced a new record in low-latency messaging performance for Ethernet networks based on the latest STAC-M2 benchmark test conducted by Mellanox on IBM (News - Alert) systems.

The record was achieved using Mellanox ConnectX-2 EN 10GbE NICs with RDMA over Converged Ethernet (RoCE), the IBM BNT RackSwitch G8264 10GbE switch, and IBM x3550 servers running IBM's WebSphere MQ Low Latency Messaging (LLM) technology.

The Mellanox and IBM solution outperformed the most recent record holder (based on a comparable configuration), achieving a 30 percent improvement over results that were announced just two months ago, company officials said.
