CIOs Need a Data Center Power Plan
I ran across a great article the other day by Dan Woods on Forbes' blog (you can find it here). In it, Dan articulates eleven power-related issues that the IT industry as a whole is wrestling with today and that should be top-of-mind for all CIOs. No surprise since the price of power continues to rise with no end in sight. To Dan's list, I'd like to add a few additional business concerns commonly discussed at recent IT industry forums and practitioner summits. Looking at all of the moving parts, a pattern starts to emerge of critically important energy issues that have been ignored for far too long:

Force10's Open Network Automation Efficiently Manages Virtual Data Centers
To lower cost of computing, along with improved uptime and application performance with raised corporate productivity, data centers have been slowly migrating to virtual environment. However, managing this transition built on pool of virtual resources is not smooth. Keeping all of the virtual resources in sync is a near-impossible task for any data center of significant size. Thanks to automation, it is playing an important role in helping data center engineers better manage virtual resources. Without automation, data center managers have to manually re-provision and optimize server, storage and network resources every time the smallest change in the environment occurs.
